Workin' on it Wednesday!

Welcome to my first Workin' on it Wednesday Linky! Each Wednesday, I'd like to share what we've been working on in the classroom, or activities that we have tried with our students, or materials that we've made to help our students' learning. I would love to see blog posts linked up, but I am ok with freebies or paid products as well. I will attempt to make a button for this during the next week, but I don't have one made yet (it might take me awhile!)

My Workin' on it Wednesday is related to fraction division. We've been working on the fraction operations, and will start division on our next school day (whenever that may be, with the impending snow and Presidents' Day!)  After school I worked on creating a visual that shows models of division, to help students understand what dividing fractions and mixed numbers looks like and means; I also included examples to show how to divide fractions, using both the reciprocal method and the common denominators method.

Before I share this with my students we will spend some time exploring fraction division with a few word problems to think about, explore, and solve.

What are you working on? Please link up and share!

  1. I am not middle school but I would love to join this link party to get more ideas with Math. We are out of school this week due to snow but we have been working on patterns in multiplication and division. I posted a link to an math activity pack I created for my students.

By the way, I love your anchor chart on Dividing Fractions. I'm very good at fractions but I can see how it can be difficult. That anchor chart is awesome.

  6. I love this idea, I'm sure students were able to clearly understand the concept of dividing numbers with fractions. I hope I can use your idea, but I'll be sure to quote you. Thank you for sharing!

Help Students Learn to Manage Their Time

In my early years of teaching, I didn't always know what to say when students told me they didn't have time to do their homework (other than something like, "You must have had some time between 4:00 and 9:00!). There were all kinds of reasons - they had sports practice or a lesson, or they had to go to their brother's or sister's game/practice/event of some kind; or their parents took them shopping or out to eat. At that time I had one child (who was 2 when I started teaching), so I didn't have the experience from a parent's point of view of making sure I was getting my kids to their activities, getting done all the house-related things, and also making sure they were getting their homework done. This made it a little difficult for me to relate to the students' situations, but I tried to help them think about how much time they did have to do their work. Being involved in activities definitely reduces time for schoolwork, but it doesn't mean t...
